Route 22 West Ramp to I-287 North Closed Dec. 11

The ramp from Route 22 West to I-287 North will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Closing this ramp will allow the contractor to perform paving work and grade adjustments in advance of switching traffic from the temporary diversion road to the new Route 22 West on Friday, Dec. 13.

A detour pattern will be in effect on Dec. 11 taking traffic down Route 22 West to the next ramp for I-287 North, which is past the Bridgewater Commons Mall.

A variable-message board has been posted to alert motorists and numerous signs will be posted along the actual detour route. This is a one-day ramp closure.

Special Senatorial Election

On Wednesday, 16 October, the Special Senatorial Election to fill the late Sen. Lautenberg's seat will be held with polls open from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. As has been announced on our 1630-AM Radio Station, voting no longer takes place at West End School. Voting District Nos. 6, 7 & 11 will now vote at the Community Center, located immediately behind the Vermeule Mansion at 614 Greenbrook Road. All other polling locations and districts remain as before. If you use a mail-in ballot from any voting district, there is no change. Of course, Tuesday, 5 November remains this year's General Election Day.

Fall Leaf Clean-Up Help Available to Elderly & Disabled Residents

Sign Up by Oct. 30

Do you know an elderly or disabled person who needs help getting his or her yard ready for the winter months?

The Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services will have volunteers available in November to rake leaves for elderly and disabled homeowners around the county who have no other means to do yard work.

If you need this service or know someone who does, contact Laurie Beckhorn in the Office of Volunteer Services by Oct. 30 at (908) 541-5715.

Additional volunteers are still needed as well. The annual leaf clean-up project will take place Saturday, Nov. 23. However, anyone who would like to help but cannot make it that day is welcome to schedule an alternative date by calling the Office of Volunteer Services at (908) 541-5715.

Survey Focuses on Cultural Programs in Somerset County

The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission invites and encourages the general public - residents and non-residents alike - as well as individual artists and arts and history organizations, including staff and board members, to take an online Cultural Assessment Survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/scchcsurvey The deadline for responses is Sept. 15.

"The Cultural & Heritage Commission needs your thoughts and ideas to make Somerset County all it can be," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, the commission's liaison. "Your responses will provide us with insights into the community's cultural needs for future and ongoing projects, services and opportunities."

The commission is conducting an assessment and long-range plan of visual and performing arts, history and preservation resources. Survey responses will help shape the plan.

"The more diverse information we get, the better the plan will be," Freeholder Walsh said.

4th of July Parade and Celebrations

The 12th Annual 4th of July Parade begins at 10:00am sharp.

The Parade Route will begin at Wilson Avenue, turns left, head East onto Greenbrook Road, turn right onto Somerset Street continuing to Craig Place, then West with a right on Grove Street to the reviewing stand at Stony Brook Fields on Greenbrook Road.

Saturday, July 6th, there will be a Band Concert and Fireworks on the West End School Grounds beginning at 7:00pm.

Borough Offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th. Public Safety personnel will remain on duty.

Veterans Retire Flags

Ball-Kirch Post 265, American Legion is collecting tattered, worn, frayed, and otherwise unserviceable American Flags to be properly retired. You may drop the flags off at the North Plainfield Memorial Library located at 6 Rockview Avenue or at the North Plainfield Borough Clerk's Office located at 263 Somerset Street during normal business hours. Flags can also be dropped off in the lobby of the North Plainfield Police Department 24 hours a day.

The Flag Retirement Service will be held at Vermeule Park located at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Vermeule Place on Friday June 14, 2013. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 PM. The public is cordially invited to attend the service.
