New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission coming to North Plainfield

North Plainfield Police Department

Chief William Parenti

Press Release:  September 4, 2009

Police Chief William G. Parenti announced today that a team of assessors from the New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission “NJLEAC” will arrive in the Borough of North Plainfield on Monday September 21, 2009.  The assessors will re-examine all components of the Police Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services.  The accreditation program requires police agencies to comply with modern police standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

I thank the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police for pursuing the concept and developing a voluntary statewide Law Enforcement Accreditation program for New Jersey, Chief Parenti said.

Every three years law enforcement executives from NJLEAC come to the North Plainfield Police Department to confirm that we continue to meet the standards.  During this time, the assessors take public comment by phone.  Police employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling 908-963-1571 on September 22, 2009 between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.  Comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the Police Department’s ability to comply with NJLEAC standards.  A copy of the standards is available at the Borough Clerk’s office and posted on the Police Department’s website.  For more information, contact Lieutenant Joe Mack at 908-769-2926.

Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven way of helping law enforcement agencies calculate and improve their overall performances.  The assessors for our Re-Accreditation are; Chief Michael P. Peoples, Long Hill Township Police Department (ret.), and Deputy Chief Sam Hishmeh, Long Hill Township Police Department (ret).

I want to praise the men and women of this Department.  These Officers make a difference in people’s everyday lives.  I think it is a testament to them that they are one of only two agencies in Somerset County to be accredited and even more impressive the fact that of the 541 Municipalities with a Police Force in the State of New Jersey only 34 have achieved the coveted Accredited status.  North Plainfield’s motto is “A Proud Community” and the North Plainfield Police strive to make the Mayor, Council, and the public we serve “Proud” as we become the first to be reaccredited in Somerset County Chief Parenti said.
