North Plainfield “Clean the Brook”

On Saturday May 3, 2008, over 40 volunteers from several North
Plainfield organizations gathered at Holy Cross Church for some light
refreshments and to sign in for a community service project. As part of
the North Plainfield Community Forum's Second Annual "Green the Brook",
members of the North Plainfield Borough Council, North Plainfield Property
Maintenance Committee, North Plainfield Environmental Commission,
Church of the Holy Cross, Watchung Presbyterian Church, Latino Coalition, Boy Scouts and
Girl Scouts, and the  North Plainfield Public Works Department, donned
special tee shirts and were deployed to the clean-up zones. The scouts picked
up the length of Somerset Street from the Plainfield Border to
Greenbrook Road and then moved on to clean up Parkview Avenue from West
End School to Clinton Avenue. The scouts netted 10 large trash bags of
litter. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew was working its way through the
floodplain woodland along the Green Brook from Clinton Avenue to
Princeton Lane. Here the refuse included larger trash items besides the
usual litter. Tires and household junk swelled the pile to 4 more
truckloads.

After the cleanup the volunteers were treated to an ethnic feast with
food from several of our local eateries. Latino Coalition arranged with
Pan de Casa, Grove Barbeque, Tropicana, La Hacienda, and Orlando’s
Chicken, to supply generous portions of their delicious treats. It
turned out to be quite a popular project, which makes it a great annual event.
