Press Release

North Plainfield Police Chief William G. Parenti announced today that a team of assessors administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive in the Borough on Sunday October 1, 2006.  The assessors will examine all components of the Police Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services.  The accreditation program requires police agencies to comply with modern police standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

The assessors are Chief Leo Selb, from, the Woodbury Heights N.J. Police Department, and Chief Jack Hill, from the Belmar N.J. Police Department.

The North Plainfield Police Department is voluntarily submitting to the process of verification by the assessment team confident that the Department meets all CALEA law enforcement standards in obtaining accredited status.  Chief Parenti said, “Obtaining accredited status is a highly prized recognition, that demonstrates what I have always known; the North Plainfield Police Department is a representation of law enforcement professional excellence.”

As part of the on-site assessment, police employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Sunday October 1, 2006 at 6:30 p.m.  The session will be in the Court Room in Borough Hall located at 263 Somerset Street.  North Plainfield, New Jersey.

Police employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling 908-963-1571 on October 3, 2006 between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Comments will be taken by the Assessment Team.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the police department’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  A copy of the standards is available at the Borough Clerk’s Office.  For more information, contact Lieutenant Joe Mack at 908-769-2926.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the North Plainfield Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030-2201.

The assessors will scrutinize departmental documents, interview individuals and visit sites within North Plainfield to insure and verify compliance of the standards.  After the CALEA assessors conclude the evaluation of the Department, they will report their findings to the full Commission, which will determine if the Department is granted accredited status.  Lt. Mack added that accreditation is for three years at which time a re-assessment must occur, during which time the North Plainfield Police Department must present annual reports to CALEA demonstrating continued compliance with applicable accreditation standards.
